ICYMI- August Meeting Recap

Here’s the August meeting recap.

August’s Featured Speakers – Elena Friedman, Athletico Physical Therapy  and Jim Schneider, Pedal HardAthletico_logo

The topic this month was about the bike fit process, the benefits of a proper bike fit and how to eliminate the aches and pains you have while riding. The slides from the presentation are linked below.

Bike Fit Presentation Slides

A few points to keep in mind:

  • The overall goal of a bike fit is to give you more comfort, efficiency and power.
  • It’s all about how you pedal – aiming for a still/relaxed upper body and all of the motion/power coming from below the waist.
  • Changing your fit could change your center of gravity which may in turn change the way your bike handles.
  • Our sponsor, Big Shark, offers 3 levels of bike fit ranging from a basic fit all the way to a motion capture method. One of your membership benefits is a free basic bike fit (normally a $100 value). Schedule your bike fit by submitting this form (mention you are a tri club member).

Many thanks to Jim and Elena for the informative presentation.

Gateway Cup – Host Housing

Gateway Cup is coming up on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-5,  and host housing coordinator Amy Strahan stopped by to talk about the host housing program. Similar to triathlon homestays, the host housing program seeks to match teams and individual racers with locals who have extra room in the homes. Riders just need a place to sleep, access to fridge space and possibly use of a washer/dryer. You aren’t expected to provide food or transportation. Riders without transportation will be placed closer to the race venues. Riders with their own transportation may be placed further away. This is a unique opportunity to rub shoulders with a few pro cyclists. At last check there were still 10 teams (of 5 or more racers) still to place. Ideally, they would be housed together, but many would be willing to split up if housed nearby. Even if you just have room for one or two, contact Amy for more information. Her contact info is included in the pdf file linked below.

Coordinator Updates
Volunteering

Our next volunteer series event (worth 2 points) will be Border Wars on September 25th.

The club is now a sponsor of Sunset Hills Triathlon and committed 20 volunteers to the race. If you’d like to help out, contact Race director Teresa Johnson. Race date is Sunday, August 28th.

Clothing

A survey will go out shortly to find out what pieces of clothing you are interested in purchasing. Answering the survey will give the clothing team a better idea of what to order for the club.

 Next (and future) Meeting(s)

Author and coach, Matt Fitzgerald will be coming to speak for our September meeting, on the 21st. We have secured a location which will be the auditorium at MICDS. The meeting will begin promptly at 6:30pm, not our normal 7:00pm and no food is allowed in the auditorium. There will be an opportunity to purchase his books at the meeting and get an autograph or personal message if desired after his presentation.

Our October meeting will be a Q&A coaching panel featuring our three sponsor coaches, Paul Schon of IronBrick Training, Jennifer Meyer of TriSmart Training Systems, and Samantha Murphy of Evolve Coaching Systems.
